Mwenze KIBWANGA [Kilumba (DRC), 1925–1999, Lubumbashi (DRC)] - Lot 140
Mwenze KIBWANGA [Kilumba (DRC), 1925–1999, Lubumbashi (DRC)] (Untitled) The Antelopes, oil on canvas. Signed lower right, circa 1960, framed. 62 x 75 cm. Note: Mwenze Kibwanga was born in 1925 in Kilumba, in the province of Katanga. In 1934, he began attending classes at the Protestant mission in Mwanza, where he also took drawing lessons. He left his village in 1942 to settle in Elisabethville and continued his elementary education with the Methodists. In 1950, Kibwanga was admitted to the “Atelier du Hangar,” founded by the French painter Romain-Desfossés. It was there that he developed his style, bringing his subjects to life through a technique of hatching and parallel lines that alternate between light and dark tones, following the contours of people, animals, and vegetation.
