ARMAN (1928–2005) - Lot 168
ARMAN (1928–2005) "Punu Mask," Gabon, gouache on paper, signed. Handwritten inscription on the back: "Provenance: the artist's studio." 34 x 21 cm (viewing dimensions). Note: Born in Nice and died in New York, Arman established himself as one of the major figures of 20th-century art and a central figure in the New Realists movement, which he co-founded with Yves Klein under the guidance of art critic Pierre Restany. Very early on, he developed a radical artistic language by directly incorporating manufactured objects into his works, which he considered to be natural extensions of the human hand. He became known for his famous “accumulations”—assemblage of everyday objects (watches, instruments, trash)—which powerfully revealed the mechanisms of production and consumption in modern society. His work is rooted in a profound reflection on the materiality, repetition, and memory of objects, engaging in a dialogue with the experiments of his contemporaries such as César and Jean Tinguely. Based between Nice, Vence, and New York, Arman pursued an international career marked by major exhibitions and public commissions. A discerning collector, particularly of African art, he infused his work with a keen eye for objects and their symbolic significance, establishing himself as a key figure in modern art.
