Carmen DIONYSE (1921–2013) - Lot 171
Carmen DIONYSE (1921–2013) Untitled (figure), glazed ceramic, H 6 cm without base, signed on the back Note: A leading figure in postwar Belgian ceramic sculpture, Carmen Dionyse trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, notably under Jos Verdegem, before devoting herself fully to ceramics in the 1950s. Winner of the Grand Prix at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, she developed a personal sculptural language, drawing inspiration from ancient mythologies, biblical narratives, and ancient cultures. She herself acknowledged the influence of Henry Moore, which is particularly evident in some of her early figures and in her explorations of the body, protection, and the human form. Her work is part of the postwar revival of Belgian ceramics, alongside artists such as Pierre Caille, Antoine de Vinck, and Olivier Strebelle, who also helped free ceramics from its purely decorative function and establish it firmly within the realm of modern sculpture.
