Charles de BRANDNER de GOLDENSTERN (active in Brussels in th - Lot 153
Charles de BRANDNER de GOLDENSTERN (active in Brussels in the early 19th century) View of the Battle of Waterloo; in the center, Wellington and the Allied general staff; in the foreground, Highlanders tending to a wounded officer, likely the Prince of Orange, watercolor and gouache, signed, dated 1816, and inscribed “Brussels” at the bottom center, 58 x 101 cm Note: The artist, Dr. Charles Conrad Alexandre Georges de Brandner de Goldenstern, was a Brussels-based surgeon and obstetrician who was honored for his dedication to caring for the wounded at the Battle of Waterloo, which explains the prominence given to the care of the wounded in the foreground of his composition, painted just one year after the battle; he became a member of the Council of Regents of Brussels in 1829, and his portrait is housed at the Museum of the City of Brussels.
