Louis Koyongonda (1918-), Congolese/Zairean painter and member of the Stanley-Pool School directed by Laurent Moonens, was one of the most important artists in post-independence Zaire.
His work, composed of landscapes, market scenes and portraits, is captivating for its expressiveness, its sure touch and the realism with which he captures his figures in their daily activities. The artist enjoyed real success in the 1950s, boosted by several international exhibitions. His historical and symbolic importance can also be gauged by the fact that, in 1962, one of his works was presented to the White House during the meeting between Congolese Prime Minister Cyrille Adoula and President John F. Kennedy.
The sale features a group of works acquired from the artist by a Belgian doctor living in the Congo, who over the years commissioned several paintings from Koyongonda and supported his practice. These include a portrait of his daughter, as well as numerous landscapes, testifying to the richness of his inspiration.
