Phillippe-Joseph BROCARD (1831-1896) attributed to - Lot 48
Phillippe-Joseph BROCARD (1831-1896) attributed to Pair of blown glass mosque lamps decorated with geometric, floral and arabesque motifs, H +-25cm. Note: Mosque lamps were luxury objects, intended to be hung in the mosques and mausoleums of Egypt and Mamluk Syria. Produced from the 12th to the 14th century, they were soon collected by wealthy European amateurs such as Auguste and Eugène Dutuit, who bequeathed a mosque lamp with epigraphic decoration to the Petit Palais in 1902. A great admirer of the Syrian and Egyptian pieces he had admired at the Musée de Cluny and in the collections of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs, Brocard succeeded in decorating his glassware with solid-colored hard enamels as early as 1867. The virtuosity with which he mastered this difficult technique won the admiration of Emile Gallé.
