Embroidery, 15th Century possible period - Lot 39
Embroidery, 15th Century possible period A Rare chinese embroidery of the Huayan Triad (华严三圣). This embroidery portrays the Huayan Trinity (Huayan Sansheng), the central triad venerated in Huayan Buddhism. At the center sits Vairocana Buddha. He is shown with a calm and radiant expression, seated upon a grand, jewel-encrusted throne, surrounded by a mandorla filled with miniature buddhas and celestial motifs, symbolizing his boundless wisdom and omnipresence. To his left is Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, depicted riding a majestic lion. His elegant posture and gentle demeanor reflect spiritual insight, while the lion symbolizes the fearless power of transcendent wisdom. On the right is Samantabhadra, the Bodhisattva of Practice and Universal Virtue, seated upon a richly adorned white elephant. The elephant, often shown with multiple tusks, represents strength, steadfastness, and the vast scope of compassionate vows. Above the triad, heavenly beings, apsaras, and small buddhas float among billowing golden clouds, emphasizing the divine atmosphere of the Huayan world. Below, guardian figures, mythical beasts, and offering vessels complete the composition, reinforcing the grandeur and cosmic order associated with the Huayan teaching. At the bottom, a line of Chinese characters identifies the work as being produced during the Yongle period of the Ming dynasty, suggesting it may have been a devotional or imperial textile created for temple use or for court-sponsored Buddhist rituals. Yong-le mark and possible is period, 15th Century. L&W : 180 x 127 cm. Perfect condition. .
