Auguste Nicolas CAIN (1821-1894) - Lot 211
Auguste Nicolas CAIN (1821-1894) Le marabout et la grenouille sur une feuille de nénuphar, bronze, signed, 22 cm. Note: Auguste Cain (1821-1894), a French animal sculptor, trained outside the traditional academic circuit after an apprenticeship with decorator Alexandre Guionnet. He successively attended the workshops of François Rude and Antoine-Louis Barye at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, before becoming close to Pierre-Jules Mène, whose son-in-law he became. He made his debut at the Salon des artistes français in 1846, and gradually established himself as one of the leading exponents of nineteenth-century animal sculpture. Winner of several awards (Salon, 1867 Universal Exhibition), he was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1869. His powerful, naturalistic groups - lions, tigers, fighting birds of prey - met with great success, both in bronze editions and as monumental sculptures. From the 1860s onwards, he received major public commissions, notably for Paris gardens (Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries) and prestigious ensembles such as the Château de Chantilly. His work, characterized by a keen sense of observation and movement, is a direct descendant of Barye and contributed to the revival of animal sculpture during the Second Empire.
