Victor VASARELY (1906-1997) - Lot 33
Victor VASARELY (1906-1997) Egcis C, Composition in "OpArt" of circles and squares. Mixed media. Dated 1967. Composition 74.5 x 74.5 cm x Black support 91.5 x 91.5. Antique aluminum frame. Provenance : Christie's London, sale of 26.10.1995; Galerie Denise René, Paris Literature : Marcel Joray, Vasarely II, Neufchâtel 1973, (illustrated in color) Note on a similar work in the Centre Pompidou: Color bursts into Vasarely's work in 1966. Arny is the image of this "true kaleidoscope of joyful, frank, healthy forms and colors", underlines Michel Ragon; "the "planetary folklore" is born" (M. Ragon, pref. to cat. exp. Vasarely, multidimensional polychromies, Denise René gallery, 1970). ... This type of composition, which is based on the union of the circle and the square, owes much to the origins of optico-kinetic art (Josef Albers). The utopia of a universal art in which the individual is the center, which Victor Vasarely's work obstinately illustrates, is rooted however in the research of the visual artist on the physiological reactions of the observer, which are "the scientific foundation of his dynamic conception of art" (Klaus Albert Schröder, Utopia of geometry, Victor Vasarely, 50 years of creation, Lausanne, Olympic Museum, 1996, p. 18).
