HÉLIOPOLIS (Egypt), 1925-1929 - Lot 40
HÉLIOPOLIS (Egypt), 1925-1929 Exceptional set of original silver prints documenting the creation of Heliopolis (Egypt), an emblematic project initiated by Baron Édouard Empain, a major figure in the great international urban developments of the early 20th century. This rare corpus offers a direct, structured and chronological account of this large-scale project, including : - rare aerial views of the emerging city; - an important series devoted to the construction of the racecourse grandstands (1928), with technical handwritten annotations detailing the various phases of the site (formwork, foundations, masonry); - architectural views blending Orientalist influences and European modernity, characteristic of the Heliopolis project; - scenes of life and traffic in the fledgling city; - photograph of the grandstands in operation with public; - handwritten card dated 1928 evoking life on site; - documentation of an official groundbreaking ceremony, probably in the presence of King Albert I of Belgium. Also included: - a period brass plaque engraved "Architecte Verhulst", signed "Ets Busat"; - a Heliopolis reference book (Fonds Mercator), for documentary purposes. Provenance: Verhulst family, engineer/architect involved in the construction. Note: the sale includes two paintings by Maurice VERHULST (1886-1968), made during his stay in Egypt as engineer/architect of the city of Heliopolis.
