Nkusu dacosta (Felelo), (Bas-Congo, 1914 – 1995, Kinshasa, D - Lot 99
Nkusu dacosta (Felelo), (Bas-Congo, 1914 – 1995, Kinshasa, DRC) (Painting of 70s/80s), 68X48,5 cm One of the deans of modern Congolese painting. In 1958, he participated in the Universal Exhibition in Brussels and in 1966, his works were presented at the first festival of Negro arts in Dakar. Nkusu is also deeply religious. This aspect of his personality appears in his many religiously inspired paintings. Living very close to the simple and traditional life, he transposes with great finesse and taste the scenes of biblical life in an African context. His "Christ" are African. The Holy Family crosses a bush locality on the back of an antelope, the Miraculous Fishing takes place on a Zairean river on board a pirogue... He remains deeply attached, in his themes, to the roots of his land and loves the traditional art from which he draws his inspiration. AICA/Zaire awarded him in 1978 the Golden Palette, a badge that rewards artists who have remained active for at least thirty years.
