Amalric WALTER (1870-1959) - Lot 224
Amalric WALTER (1870-1959) "Papillon de nuit" (c.1920), pâte de verre vide poche, signed Bergé SC, +-16.5 cm. Note: A French artist trained at the Manufacture de Sèvres, Amalric Walter established himself as one of the great masters of pâte de verre in the early 20th century. After starting out in ceramics, he turned to working with glass, a medium in which he developed a body of work of great technical and chromatic richness. His career took a decisive turn when, in 1905, he joined Daum in Nancy. In collaboration with decorator Henri Bergé, he created numerous models in pâte de verre with organic shapes and nuanced colors, fully in keeping with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. Their creations, including innovative stained-glass windows made without lead settings, met with great success, notably at the 1909 Nancy International Exhibition. In 1919, Walter set up his own studio in Nancy, where he continued his research and developed a large body of models, often produced in limited editions due to the complexity of the technique. He collaborated with several sculptors, including Auguste Rodin, Alfred Finot and Jules Cayette, helping to bring sculpture and the decorative arts closer together. Awarded several prizes, notably at the 1900 Universal Exhibition and the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, Amalric Walter played a central role in the revival of glass arts in France. His work, at the crossroads of technical innovation and decorative refinement, bears witness to the excellence of the Nancy school.
