Alfred LIYOLO (Bolobo, DRC, 1943 - Vienna 2019) - Lot 239
Alfred LIYOLO (Bolobo, DRC, 1943 - Vienna 2019) "Le maracasiste", brass sculpture, signed and numbered 3/5, H +- 35 cm. Note: A major sculptor on the Zairean scene, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Alfred Liyolo established himself in the 1970s as a central figure in modern African art, supported by Mobutu Sese Seko. Considered one of the pioneers of bronze in Central Africa, he is notably the author of emblematic monuments in Kinshasa, including the famous Bouclier de la Révolution on Mont Ngaliema. Returning to Zaire at the call of the regime, he played an active part in the emergence of a modern national art, before going into exile during the troubles of the 1990s. Today, his work, both powerful and symbolic, bears essential witness to the artistic and political history of the Congo.
